Following the recent detection of VHSv in the Great Lakes I conducted a study on VHSv in Lake Erie yellow perch. A newly developed RT-PCR and nested-PCR assay was tested on yellow perch blood samples collected in 2008 and compared to the cell culture method of testing. I found that the RT-PCR assay coupled with the nested PCR was more sensitive in detecting VHSv in yellow perch than the cell culture method used by testing laboratories. The effects of VHSv infection on yellow perch feeding were investigated by analysis of growth patterns in yellow perch otoliths. Periods of slow growth in the early portion of the growing season were significantly more frequent in peak-VHSv years than pre-VHSv years. Lastly, phylogenetic analysis of nucleocapsid gene sequences from VHSv showed sequence differences from Great Lakes isolates were associated with geographic location and not host species or time of isolation.
