Reading literacy is seen as a foundational skill in new generation without constancy. Reading performance is vitally important to overall achievements of learning. Newspaper which provides learners with various and limitless possibilities, is also the reading material of lifelong education. Hence, this thesis aims to investigate NIE on first grade elementary school student s word recognition ability, the achievement of learning Mandarin, reading attitude, reading habit and reading interest. The quaised-experimental method of nonequivalent pretest-posttest control group design. The subjects were first-grade students of two classes in one elementary school in New Taipei City. One of these two classes was the experimental group given the implementation of NIE while the other class was the control group reading by themselves in reading class and didn t offer any reading instruction. The research instrument included Huang Xiushuang establishes Chinese Character Recognition Test and Mandarin semester results. The research used statistical software to examine and analyze statistic data. Besides, through the questionnaires from students and parents to proceed the discussion and analyze the comment of questionnaire reflected for NIE.
The research conclusions after the implementation of NIE were as follows The implementation of NIE can enhance student s word recognition ability, the achievement of learning Mandarin, and has a significant effect on students with low achievement of learning Mandarin. The implementation of NIE can help students establish the positive attitude toward, build up the habit of reading and enhance the interest of reading.
